I have been randomly surfing blogs of frenz and all of them have been putting up pictures of their Thanksgiving escapades. I guess people do like looking at pictures, rather than words, unless of course, they are penned by me. But I am in no mood to pen anything write (right) now, and so I shall succumb to the temptation of putting up a picture of a few of us post-Thanksgiving at this poser restaurant called NINE. The ambience and poserish image is rather cool ... in addition to the fine-dining area, there are couches for watching football and basketball on large screen TVs, and several bars for alcohol-sipping. What's even more amazing is the presence of small-screen TVs located above each urinal in the men's toilet, so that you can follow whatever game on ESPN even as you are doing your private business. Gosh, never have I taken such a long pee ... standing there even when I am actually done with my business, just waiting for the ball to go out of bounds so I can quickly rush back out. I am not sure about the situation in the female toilet ... they probably have some TV screen in each cubicle too, but that sounds rather far-fetched. The only terrible thing is the location of this place ... located 8 blocks west of Michigan Ave, thus making the long hike from the river even more treacherous amidst the sub-zero degree Chicago weather. Ok, enough of bs for now, lemme actually get to posting the only pic I have of all of us together posing in the poser restaurant.

I do apologize for the small size of the pic, but this is necessary in order for it to fit into my layout decor. Too big a pic would cover my really cool background pic; too small would make it rather stupid to put up, wouldn't it? So here's a description of everyone in the pic, machiam some soccer team, minus 3 sending-offs.

(Seated, from L to R): Lijun, Jason, Huiying, YC
(Standing, from L to R): Alan, Yihan, Doris, Shengrong

And here's a pic of our dessert:

(Seated, from Down to Up): Campfire s'mores, Chocolate (velvet mousse cake, godiva chocolate sauce, fudgsicle sorbet)

Amazing how brilliant rojak dessert can be!

As evidence that Leeds are still part of the big 5 of English soccer, despite their flirtations with Champioship soccer these past 2 seasons, the Sun newspaper dedicated an entire article to Leeds United, and the best XI to have played for them. And here's the result:

Here's a direct quote from the article: "Only the Liverpool side of the same period (1970s) could touch the men from Elland Road, a team that was professional to the extreme." Viva la Leeds ... Marching on Together!!!

Thanksgiving came and went ... Christmas is next. But yeah, this year's Thanksgiving was really fun. Our own Regents Thanksgiving party had its fair share of turkey, roast ducks, roast beef and mashed potatoes, champagne and root beer. Not surprisingly, since only the guys cooked, there weren't any vegetables ... the closest thing to that was potatoes, and that's vege enough. Thank you very much. And I played really nice host to friends from Berkeley and CMU ... now that's something that doesn't happen often. And after that, poker nite was fun. All hail the new KOP - king of poker. Rather miraculously, I won both rounds. With the buy-in being $5, and 6 people playing, with only the top 2 getting the cash, I managed to win $30 last nite. At this rate, and with this skill, who needs ATMs animore? Never mind the sleeping at 4am eventually ...

This is Hermione, and she is hot.

Just went to watch Harry Potter today, and then proceeded to Korean Town for 1 nice hot bbq with fellow singaporeans and friends from Berkeley and CMU. Seems like I ended up entertaining them after all. Good food, lots of crap talk and bullshitting, great and excessive soju, pretty much what one could ask for on the eve of Thanksgiving. We shall be having a lovely Thanksgiving dinner tomorrow nite ... seems like I shall end up being a nice host after all.

Sometimes, u watch a show that really moves you ... sometimes, u hear something and it just sticks in your mind ... sometimes you chance upon a word and it means so much. For me that word is 'serendipity': sometimes an accident can make one realize something sweet that hitherto remained hidden, discover a new truth, something fortunate and something you'd always wish for. Chance occurances ... miracles.

Gosh, so many people are coming to Chicago for Thanksgiving ... people from Berkeley, from who knows where, and people from wherever I don't really care. I guess since we all have friends coming down this week, we'll have to bring them out. Yeap, the key word is 'out'. We're not gonna bring them round Chicago, just out for a show or a dinner. And someone suggested clubbing (oh yeah, Hanxue and Jason mentioned that), so it looks like this weekend is not gonna be as quiet as the weekend just passed, when all I did was laze at home, and chill ... and be cool.

I don't intend to blog often now, but this one I think is too good, and too valuable to miss out. So this being a Saturday morning, I was naturally following the progress of Leeds United in another one of their Championship matches. Today, they were facing Southampton, one of Leeds' promotion rivals. After I came out of the shower, Leeds were already 2-0 down inside the 1st 30 minutes, and they had barely 40% of the ball possession. So I thought, gone case liao, so I closed the page, and went about doing my problem set. Being a lifelong Leeds fan, although I knew Leeds were going to lose, and it was only a question of the margin of defeat, I still bore some hope that they might stage a revival So I checked the half time score, and found that Leeds were 3-0 down. Shit! So I went back to my problem set again.

After half an hour, I thought I might as well just check to see how badly the game was going, and to my pleasant surprise, Leeds just scored a 2nd goal, to make the score 3-2. Being the die-hard Leeds fan, I was full of optimistic hope that a miracle could indeed happen, and so I was glued to the screen. When the score went blinking again to signal that another goal had been scored in the game, I was delighted to see that it was Leeds that had scored again. 3-3. And with 5 minutes to go, Liam Miller - an on-loan signing from one of Leeds' biggest rivals (I don't think I need to mention which club that is. yeap the one in red) - completed the seemingly impossible comeback by scoring the winning goal to give Leeds an amazing comeback 4-3 win. Reminiscent of Leeds' 4-3 victory over Derby 6 years back when they also came back from 3 goals down ... and also to Mark Viduka's 4 goals in Leeds' 4-3 win over Liverpool some 4 years back. It's great being a Leeds fan!!!!

So, 4 goals in the last 20 minutes. Rise from the ashes. I think this just goes to show the power of grit and determination and will power - what some people like to call the 'never say die' attitude. What Leeds exhibited in this game can similarly be applied to each and everyone of us too. Even though the chips are down, even though you may feel down and out, even though you think there is no one there for you, persevere and you will come out stronger. And this goes out specially to all my friends out there.

Here's my physics lab report, in short. Topic: Sources of experimental errors.

There is a large difference between the change in potential energy and kinetic energy of the collision, even though we expected a conservation of energy. This discrepancy can probably be attributed to the following sources of error inherent in our experiment. Firstly, the experimenter woke up really late this morning, so late in fact that he did not even have time to shower in order to catch the next available bus so as not to miss too much of his civilization class. So late in fact that he totally forgot that it was going to snow today. As a result, his mind is still in a blur as of now, and he is in a rather dazed state yet. Hence errors due to human reaction time are greatly magnified due to this slowing down of his senses and ability for coordination. This results in a slow reaction time when taking time intervals. Secondly, the experimenter does not see the need to repeat measurements over and over again to take the mean. In fact, he feels that one, or at most 2 sets of readings, are necessary. This requirement to perform 5 sets of measurements each time results in much pent-up frustration within him, so that each set of measurement gets progressively more inaccurate due to the mental unwillingness to perform the task at hand. Thirdly, the experimenter has not eaten breakfast nor lunch yet, in spite it being well into the afternoon now. Hence the lack of glucose flow to his brain severely impedes his ability to make a reasoned judgement on which measurements to take. Hence the rather uncoordinated mess in front of you, the TA. Fourthy, its snowing outside, but the experimenter totally forgot that it was gonna be 0 degrees today. Hence he wore his usual hooded sweatshirt to school only, with the result that the numbness in his hands and body has spread to his mind, and he is unable to reason properly. But I suppose there has been too much errors dependent on the experimenter. I shall now focus on inherent errors due to the equipment used. Firstly, the experimenter has never heard of the manufacturer of the ICU unit, nor has he even used the software required for this certain experiment. Inherent faults in the ICU unit cannot be discounted for. Similarly, the programmer of the software may also have mistakenly written in some errors into the software resulting in it producing constant errors in our measurement. Since these people cannot be traced, nor the errors replicated on another day, I gather that our results suggest a conservation of mechanical energy, within the range of experimental errors.

Brilliant lab report, don't you people think? If only I were the TA, I would have given this top marks, for content, originality and guts. But of course I am not the TA, nor am I stupid enough to actually include this in my lab report today. But yay, the last physics lab of the quarter is over!!!!! Cancer biology next!

Tis the 8th week, which means it's time for Winter registration again, which also means that Fall quarter is drawing to a close, which thus means that finals are just 3 weeks round the corner, which inevitably means that winter and snow are on their way here. Shit! And snow's slated for Wednesday, with temperatures fluctuating between -4 degrees and 4 degrees. Time to take out the down jacket again .... Well, enough of such miserable stuff. Monday got off to a good start. No wait, I had to wake up at 9am which is never a good start for a day, but after getting over that bad start, and then officially starting my Monday upon reaching school, I had some good news. Remember me going to Physics office hours on Friday to talk to my prof about my unhappiness of the grading of my midterm? Well, when I re-got back my midterm, I found out that he did indeed give me the points which I thought had been unfairly taken off in the 1st place. So no, I still didn't get full marks for the midterm, but at least the final score is now more commensurate with me having left 25 minutes into the midterm that day. With the original score, I would have been really pissed off with myself for my apparent complacency! But yeah, gotta work harder for finals.

So I promised more photos from Fall Formal 2005 held at Crystal Gardens. I usually deliver on my promises, don't I? When I say I'll take an afternoon nap, I always do ... So I've randomly chosen 3 photos to put up, with an eclectic mix of guys and girls, Singaporeans and HKers, and me and you, so that there is no discrimination or bias. Right!

Well, it's Saturday and time for me to finally start on my Human Genetics and Evolution take-home midterm. Well, before officially devoting myself to that. why not a recap of Friday night? So I was taking the bus 6 downtown to meet my friend for dinner. Since the bus was crowded, of course I was standing all the way in front of the bus, near the fare-paying machine and the driver. As I occasionally glanced back, I managed to see 2 of the Singaporean freshies sitting somewhere behind, but since the bus was so crowded, of course it was not feasible to go back to talk to them. Stop saying that I am dao ah. Then as the bus turned into Michigan Ave, more and more people got off the bus, and I started to hear a familiar high-pitched shrieking voice. I was positive as to who that voice belonged to, so I turned around but could not find who I was looking for. Then halfway through Michigan Ave, the same voice shrilled out "YONGCHUN!!!!!" Confirm now, I know the person has to be in the bus somewhere. So I turned around, and saw Huiying galloping toward me all the way from the back of the bus. Only when did I sit down with her, that I realized that there were actually about 6 year 1s on the bus, all going somewhere to celebrate some Thai friend's birthday. As Huiying and I were talking, this American woman started looking at us, and giggling. No wonder, Huiying's voice is like some natural microphone fitted to a PA system. You put on earplugs still can hear her as if she were beside you. But it was amusing lah .... really nice talking to her. So I got off the bus and made my way to Nordstrom to meet my friend.

We had dinner at Brassiere Jo, a lovely French retaurant in downtown Chicago, just north of the river. Ambience was nice, and since I particularly liked French food, everything about the dinner was nice really, but people, do not read too much into a dinner. If you all jealous, I can have 1 on 1 dinners with you all anytime. So we had escargots and shrimp cocktail for appetizers, and duck and fish for entrees. Simply brilliant food ... makes me wonder how come I only realized this place existed only into my 3rd year here? But yeah, I spent quite long searching for this place on Monday night, so the food had better be good. Enough about the dinner .......

As I was walking back toward Michigan Ave, I was deliberating whether or not to join the others at Fall Formal. Jennie said she wanted to take pics with me when she got back Regents at 1am, but knowing myself, I wasn't gonna not shower and continue wearing my dress clothes till so late at night. So I thought, what the heck, why not just meet them at the Crystal Gardens and take pics there, before I disappear off. The weather was really perfect, a gentle breeze blowing in from the lake, so I thought I might as well just walk to Navy Pier. At most, just a few blocks lah! I must have been crazy, ended up walking like more than 10 blocks to Navy Pier. (Oh yah, she had gone to meet some of her friends, and I thought it was better to go meet up with my other Singaporeans, rather than join her with her friends.) After what seemed like endless trudging along, I finally arrived at the glass walled aptly-named Crystal Gardens. Strangely enough, no one checked if I had tickets, so I managed to get in without purchasing any ticket. Guess they thought I was probably some waiter coming in to clear the food or to refill the drinks. Seeing how different I had dressed from the other guys, this conclusion wouldn't have been strange. So having gone in, I thought I might as well just stay and mingle with the people.

I didn't have my camera with me, so I need to consolidate all the pictures from many many people. Will post them up as soon as I get down to getting them. So here is just 1 picture, taken with Serene's camera. Pls realize ah, that my attire was suited for a French dinner, not some prom function, and my hair had been messed up by the wind over more than 10 blocks of walking, but overall, I think still quite presentable at a formal lah.

Here's something interesting about mate selection in humans ... I found it so fascinating I did not even fall asleep at all during my Human Genetics and Evolution class today. Well, as you people know, it is generally accepted that women are more picky than guys when choosing partners. Personally, I find this really hard to accept since personal and friend experiences have instead suggested the contrary, but that is another point. Let me let you in on what researchers have found out instead. Using the assumption that women are more picky, these researchers from the University of Chicago (yeah, that's here!) attempt to elucidate the reasons for this seemingly unfathomable occurance. A summary of their findings can be found here. In the experiment, a group of guys were told to wear the same shirt for a few days without using cologne or deodorants or perfume or whatever stuff that would corrupt their natural odour. Then these shirts were collected, and given to another sample of women to smell. These women were asked to select those shirts whose odour appealed to them. (Personally I think this is rather gross. I don't even smell my own clothes .... why would I go smell someone else's stuff? Do you think I have nothing better to do? Well, fortunately there are people who are willing to be lab rats for the sake of some pay, so lucky us!) The blood group of the guys and women and parents of the women were then collated. From these blood groups, the identity of the HLA antigens in each individual could henceforth be determined. For non-biology frenz out there, HLA stands for Human Leucocyte Antigens. They are present on the surface of our body cells, as a means of immunity against foreign particles. When some foreign body enters the cell and is incompatible with the body's own HLA, an immunity response is triggered and these foreign objects destroyed. So yah, back to the story. What do you think the researchers found out?

They made the surprising discovery that those guys whom each woman found attractive (ie based on the niceness of their odour) had similar HLA antigens as the father of each woman. It did not matter what the HLA antigens in the mother was, but that if a guy had similar HLA antigens (and thus blood group) as the dad, then the girl seemed to find the guy more attractive. Sounds like shit rite? Yeah I totally agree! If this applied to guys to, then doesn't it mean that since I have blood type O, and hence no A or B antigens, I would be attracted to a girl whose dad or mum was similarly of blood type O, and hence the girl would be either of blood type A, B or O? To cut the long sentence short, does this mean then that I am not attracted to girls of blood type AB? Rubbish! That would diminish the pool by a quarter. Of course I don't believe in it!

Talk about Thanksgiving break being just round the corner, well, I certainly am not thanking any of my professors for giving me so much work. Hell no, the amount of work I have this coming week is retardously ridiculous ... or ridiculously retarded if you prefer. Whatever, they mean the same thing. So much work I have that I am even doing my math problem set due coming monday today, while watching the Bulls game on TV. Worse somemore, this problem set is all about 3-D and 4-D functions, sketching them on some 2-D piece of paper. When my mind is not functioning as well as it should be, trying to imagine these functions and their regions of overlap is really really pissing me off. Having the TV in front does not help either. Not when the game is so close the Bulls end up winning by a point. No, that just fills my mind with more fuzzy images. When I am trying to picture y=1-x and z=1-x^2 overlapping in 3-D, I end up only seeing Ben Gordan driving to the basket. When I am trying to ask myself why this homework is so laborious, I end up hearing the game announcer asking "What do the Bulls need to do to win?" Crazy lah, one more question to go .... and I need to plan for my civ paper tonight too. From past experience, doing papers the day before deadline day is never too good. So no chance I'm gonna start doing up the outline for the paper tomorrow. Talking about tomorrow, we've got another Beauty World acting workshop. When will these workshops ever end? I'm already starting to get irritated by its late-night timings even though this is only the 2nd one. Well, I'm not going for physics discussion tomorrow, so thanks Annie, I need you to help me collect homework again.

People I know have recently been talking about music and arts and what not .... and I am not referring to Beauty World. So what better thing for me to discuss then about ironies? In physics class, the professor said that as a kid, he loved going through textbooks just to search for errors and mistakes in them, as a form of self-satisfaction. And he urges us to do the same too, and hints that there are several errors in the physics textbook we're using ... so no shortage of texts for us to look through. I felt like telling him there is no need for this, since the number of errors we can pin point in his lecture is more than sufficient to make me satisfied. Why bother reading and looking for mistakes, when you can just go to class and definitely hear such ridiculous "facts" he will say? Seriously there are so many errors in his explanations and examples, and yet the ang mohs still blindly copy down what he is writing on the blackboard. I am seriously amazed ...

And to my dear friends who are so concerned, nope ... I am not going for Fall Formal. Enjoy yourselves on Friday night .........

Since I am on the topic of music, and Formals, may I add that after listening to Jay Chou's new album - "November's Chopin" (an English translation for us ACS boys out there), I think 2 songs in there really strike me as touching and thoughtful. U all know I prefer slow ballads, which usually tend toward the sad side, so the 2 songs that immediately left an impression are 'Hei Se Mao Yi' and 'Feng', as most of you already know. Slow, romantic, melodic ... not the traditional pop and r&B music, but really really moving. I just listen to these 2 songs over and over again .... you all should too

Time really flies ... week 7 of fall quarter is just 2 days away. Little by little, the quarter slowly ebbs away. And seeing that fall quarter is supposedly the best quarter for doing stuff and what not (cannot imagine going out in winter with all the snow arrowing into your eyes, wind chilling out your ears, temperatures hovering round -25 degrees rite?), the best part of final year in Chicago is slowly but surely coming to a close. But the company of friends remain ... so those who are leaving after this year should really cherish our remaining times in Chicago. Ehrm, just occurred to me that this applies to everyone, not just to final years here.

Last night we had dinner at Fulton's On the River. As its name suggests, the place is located exactly on the Chicago River, dun need to walk 5 blocks north to reach Grand Lux ... it's just across the river. For those thinking of going there, the menu can be found here. It is predominantly a seafood place, but they insist their steak is pretty good too. And to top it off, there is also a sushi bar, and a wine bar in the place too, in addition to the usual fine dining table areas. I must say the scallops was really nice (we shared a plate of them), but the fish was okay okay ... nothing much to shout about. In fact, I've never even heard of most of the fish names before, so it's like based on the waitress' recommendations. Talking about the waitress, as she was recommending the specials of the day to us, we were of course looking at her and smiling rite? Of course lah, where got people so dao they continue talking among themselves or bo chap her rite? So we were listening and smiling, like we always to. And she became shy and amused, and asked us what was so funny about her. Aiyo, you never see me smile before is it? But I suppose when you are a female waitress attending to 4 guys (Serene was late ........ again), you always try to extend the conversation mah ........

My Human Genetics take home midterm is due this Thursday, since we were supposed to receive it in class last Thursday. He promised to send it thru email latest Friday, since he wasn't finished with them yet by Thursday class. But we still haven't received it yet. I really do hope we get an extension lor...

Yesterday 7pm was the first time in like over a month I actually went for discussion session, but yeah, bo pian, had to go to collect my midterm. I didn't think it was feasible to ask Annie to collect it for me, for homework yes, but I didn't think so for a midterm. But I was wrong, you just had to rummage through the pile to find your one, so I guess, I should have asked her to collect it for me still. Never mind, treat it as a one-week break for you ... hahaha. But yeah, I realize that the bloody TAs cannot bloody mark and grade for nuts, so now, I do have to talk to my professor regarding certain inconsistencies in my midterm grading. So for the first time in like a year, I am actually going for an instructor office hour. Next Friday, I am gonna pop by his office, hoping that he gives me the midterm credit I think I deserve. I know he will, cos my reasoning makes sense ... and the TA who graded qn 3 is a bloody cock or cockess (if she is female). An exhausting week is finally over ... tho I have a feeling it's all gonna repeat itself next week again. Aiya .... all the sacrifices I have to make.

It's my roommate's 21st birthday tomorrow. The original plan was to have dinner on Friday nite, and then a cake thingy later in the nite closer to 12am. However, I found out that she had to go New York for an interview apparently, so we cancelled that dinner and decided on the cake thingy on Saturday nite instead, after she returns. So basically, I had to send out an email asking people to keep Friday nite free, then a few days later, I had to send out another email apologizing. Seriously, I apologize for fuck? But nevermind, I am a nice guy. So just now during lunch, she told me she'd be flying to New York tmr morning instead, so not knowing what I was doing, I had to call the others to ask if they wanted dinner tonite instead, and kana kao pei somemore. So we'll see what happens tonite. I'm sure we'll go somewhere nice for dinner, it's just how many people will turn up. Seriously ah, all you people out there will be saying this is not the Yongchun we know lor ... more likely for him to just wish Serene happy birthday, and go back to playing his computer games, or watching TV. But a 21st birthday only comes once, so being the nice roommate that I am, I shall spend a little effort coordinating this. But only this once ... next year dun tell me it's ur 21st birthday again ah! Just j/k ...

And yah, about the SAMSU card thingy, we actually tried using it at Lao Sze Chuan today, and it worked lor. I just had to explain to the guy what the card was, and we got a small discount on out meal. So yah, the card does have some utility value after all. Our efforts did not go to waste.

Talk about being suay, no sooner had I posted the entry on acting workshops coming soon, had I to receive an email from Wanyun informing us that the first workshop would be this Thursday. The way it was written made it seem as if we had the choice of turning up or not, but judging from past experiences, this was a stupid question to ask. "Would you be able to come on Thursday?" is equivalent to "See you on Thursday, make sure you are there!" Even when I buy SCORE to bet on Leeds United winning also never so coincidental .... never have I said Leeds will start winning soon, did they actually deliver ... especially during that fateful relegation season. Talking about Leeds United, my fave player, Matthew "Killa" Kilgallon (pic below), whose contract expires at the end of this season, has finally penned a new 2.5 year deal, extending his stay at Leeds till 2008 at the very latest. I was really worried that the longer the contract situation dragged on, the more likely he'll leave. We all know what happened to Scott Carson rite, when he left for Liverwho? because he failed to extend his contract. Well, that's not gonna happen to Killa, the future of Leeds and the future of England. The future's bright .... the future's white!

"Thanks for coming down for the re-read. I'm pleased to inform you that we are offering you the role of Towkay Neo in the musical Beauty World."And so the path toward being part of the biggest show on campus this academic year begins. Acting workshops will be starting soon, but not too soon I hope ... I still wanna be able to have dinner at home, still wanna watch Raw on Monday nights, and the Chicago Bulls whenever they play, and I still wanna be able to chat at night. But ah, sadly these nightly activities will have to stop soon, once I commit myself to Beauty World. To the director who might be reading this, dun worry, Yongchun will be very professional. He has already promised to take on the role of Towkay Neo, and he will do his very best, bring the character to life, and help the non-Singaporeans (eg Koreans) who find it hard to come to grips with the Singlish in the script. Yongchun is very good one. Remember what Chloe said last year after watching my performance? "I feel like crying after watching you perform ..." The highest compliment of my acting so far ..... I must say my portrayal of the Jewish tailor, who due to cultural reasons forced upon him, and thus unable to marry the girl he likes, was really touching .... But I can't seem to recall the name of that play tho, so much for being so into it.

Fall Formal's next week, I think, and this year, it's gonna be held at Navy Pier. Last year it was at Soldier's Field, and it was pretty boring to say the least. Wasted one whole Friday night there wasting my time. For those who dun know, Formal's like the prom night here in Chicago. Should I go this year again? Dun feel like it leh, got an inkling that Navy Pier's gonna be much worse. Why dun they hold the Formal in NYC????
